An agonist is any substance — a hormone, drug, or other molecule — that binds to a receptor and activates it, triggering the same kind of biological response the body's natural signaling molecule would. It's the opposite of an antagonist, which blocks a receptor instead. "Agonist" is the broad pharmacology term underlying more specific ones used in this space, like receptor agonist and dual agonist.
