A receptor agonist is a substance that binds to a receptor and switches it on, producing the same effect the body's natural signaling molecule would. GLP-1 receptor agonist medications bind to GLP-1 receptors and activate them the way the natural GLP-1 hormone would, but typically last much longer in the body.
