Talking to your doctor about GLP-1 medications

How to prepare for the appointment and the questions worth asking, so you get a productive conversation.

A focused appointment gets you further than a rushed one. A little prep helps you and your clinician make a decision together.

Before the appointment

  • Write down your health history and anything you've already tried.
  • Note your goals and any concerns (cost, side effects, how long you'd take it).
  • Bring your insurance details so coverage can be part of the conversation.

Questions worth asking

  • Am I a candidate for a GLP-1 medication given my history?
  • What are the realistic benefits and risks for me?
  • What monitoring or follow-up would we do?
  • What happens if I stop — and how would we decide that together?
  • If cost is a barrier, are there alternatives or assistance programs?

After the appointment

  • Write down what you decided and any next steps (labs, prior authorization, a follow-up date).
  • If a prior authorization is needed, ask who submits it and roughly how long it takes.

This is peer information, not medical advice. Your clinician knows your full picture — use these prompts to start the conversation, not to replace it.
